As I look at the photograph of a welder’s sparks I am reminded of the many hours I spent in machinery sheds over the years. These sheds were typically on farms in places like Katanning or Boddington in Western Australia, Tumbarumba or Mangrove Mountain in New South Wales and many more in outback Queensland. These farms were run by industrious people. They enjoyed the life as hard as it got at times. And when things broke down like weather vanes, gear boxes, or plough shares out came the welder. It was always a wonder to me how two bits of metal could come together and be stronger at the place where they joined. I sense this is similar to the potential that exists when human beings come together with clear purpose and intention to mend what needs mending; demonstrating that we are stronger in relationships forged in mutual understanding than when we insist on remaining apart.
