Personality
Personality can be defined as "an individual's pattern of psychological processes arising from motives, feelings, thoughts, and other major areas of psychological function. Personality is expressed through its influences on the body, in conscious mental life, and through the individual's social behaviour" (Mayer, 2005). There are numerous different theories of personality each encompassing the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviours that make a person unique. Some fundamental characteristics of personality include:
- Consistency
- Psychological and physiological
- Impact of behaviours and actions
- Multiple expressions
As self-awareness is the foundation of professional development and growth, by exploring personality individuals will gain great insight into the personality of the self and others. Understanding personality allows individuals to develop a deeper understanding of their strengths and growth opportunities, a clearer picture of how their behaviour impacts others, and a better appreciation of people’s personal style and how to interact effectively.
